What happens if you spare sidonis
Canonically I play a Renegade oriented Shepard, fuelled by mostly cold logic with some impulses driven by humanity if there is room for it. Shepard is human, after all. With this in mind, there has to be a reason why Shepard is there at all.
Garrus could very easily have just asked the commander to dock for a day, or taken a shuttle out and done the deed. But he asks for help. We're not there to kill or save Sidonis, that isn't the point. He's irrelevant. We're there because Garrus is moulded by Shepard in the first game. Shep is his compass, his leader and figure head. After being dealt such a catastrophic hand, his judgement and confidence has lapsed and he needs to realign himself, to 'see what Shepard would do'.
I like he idea of being Garrus' rock, he deserves it, but I like the idea of him learning from us more. This in mind, I stall until Sidonis confesses his guilts, regrets, his self hatred and torturous existence. That's called closure. We knew how, we found out why Sidonis cracked , and now we know the consequences. I let Garrus see this, drink it all in, and then I step away.
That sniper shot isn't revenge anymore. Vengeance for his men died the moment Sidonis admitted he was a walking shell of a man. That bullet is closure, and an end to the suffering of a man who wished he was someone better.
First time through I got him to spare Sidonis. I prefer the outcome where Sidonis spills his heart out and Garrus shoots him at the end however, like you said this way it's a mercy killing and both of them get closure, that scene is much more emotional than the one where Sidonis is spared too.
I ask him one question. Sidonis unquestionably deserves it. It makes Garrus feel better. I don't think it's unquestionable that Sidonis deserves it. Garrus is not a reliable narrator, and we don't have the full story. When we do get the full story which , to be fair, is in the comics so not everyone sees it or considers it to be canon it turns out that the whole sad affair kicked off because Garrus refused to let any of his squad quit, Sidonis especially.
If he'd let them go when they wanted out, they'd all still be alive. Sidonis also thought the only one her was giving up was Garrus, not the rest of the team, and only did so under torture. But this is a running theme with Garrus and his loyalty missions, and general approach to the world.
He wants everything to be black and white, clear good guys and bad guys. The reality is that this kind of thinking just doesn't work. It depends on whether I'm going more paragon or renegade. I've never considered letting Sidonis explain himself then killing him, though. Does the conversation afterwards change accordingly? He tells Shepard he wants to die. Shepard says "If that's what you want" He says "No more sleepless nights. Oh damn. Man, I really think Garrus loyalty mission is my favorite one.
Probably one of the best short stories in the game no matter how you play it. So this is a tough one with lots to think about but where I am at currently is, one: I'll never agree with Garrus' logic on this, revenge, eye for an eye, that never ends well and isn't a justified case to straight up murder a guy no matter what he has done because that makes you no better than them and my Shepard is not about to commit murder like that. Two: Garrus is not in a great place clearly, he has almost extremist views in the first game in regards to getting the job done no matter what, but that is reckless and hot headed.
My Shepard is loyal to her friends until the end but that doesn't mean she just jumps into everything without question, your friends aren't infallible, they are flawed beings like everyone else, capable of making bad choices and when she sees Garrus in distraught she will do everything she can to help him in the right way.
Do you really want your friend to kill someone because they think it will make them feel better? That isn't the way you heal, that's how you become a sociopath. The thing about this quest is that BioWare clearly wants you to decide for yourself with the information you are given.
Do you follow Garrus without question? The comics reveal more information about this scenario which you won't learn otherwise and it helped me understand that there are always two sides to a story and that rushing in with just your side isn't wise. I used to always kill Sidonis because I was young and hot headed once too, I rushed into things without thinking and though this is just a fictional scenario in a video game, it provokes thought and conversation that is important and I have learned many life lessons from it.
The entire time Garrus is hunting down this dude for "justice" read:revenge but when we do find him, Sidonis is already a dead man walking. Broken and defeated. He's just as haunted by the ghosts as Garrus is; there's no revenge glory to be really had by sniping him out when he's already so low.
I purposely never investigate when Garrus asks for help so it becomes, "no questions asked, let's go. Garrus is my in-game brother. I know why he wants to kill Sidonis but even if I didn't, doesn't matter -- I trust Garrus. I see it as I go to Garrus and say, "Hey got a mission I need your help on. Probably going to be one way trip.
He just says, "Okay. What relay we taking? Takes a game and a half for them to get over it, even then, they're still annoying AF about it and bring Cerberus up Once we start his loyalty mission, the game automatically has me ask Garrus, "are you sure this is how you want to play this? I ignore the paragon interrupts, letting him shoot Harkin and Sidonis. I find it hypocritical to stop him when, if someone killed our entire squad, we'd kill them.
Hell, Kai Leng kills just one member, Thane, and who fucking doesn't take that renegade interrupt at the end? It's not about vengeance, it's about justice for his squad. And if you take the paragon route, it results in Sidonis turning himself into Citadel but they don't know what to do with him because Omega doesn't have any extradition because it's Omega.
All the more reason why I never let Sidonis live. Usually I let Garrus kill him after he's at least heard Sidonis' side. He was under garrus' command, so Garrus should decide his fate. I do pity Sidonis though, and sometimes that shows through by showing him mercy, in the hope he can still do some good. I play renegon Shep all the time, so I always let him take the shot.
It's what he wanted, I pushed him to be a results at all cost kinda guy in ME1, and it's exactly how my Shep would've handled it. Soooo yeah, sparing him wouldn't make sense in my playthroughs haha.
He runs and you have to kill him anyway but it's not in cold blood. I like to believe that Garrus learns from it and Sidonis is just the universe testing him once again. Letting him take the shot was the obvious choice to me, to the point where I was confused by the option not to move out of the way my first run. That kind of betrayal - ratting out your friends to save your own skin - is just so unfathomable and beyond awful to me. Plus I think Garrus has enough experience under his belt and enough history with Shepard that he deserves to make his own call.
But there is an interrupt you must do to save Sidonis, otherwise Garrus ends up shooting him anyway. Alright thanks for the answers, now I don't have to worry about pumping my Paragon score before I do it. On the subject of this mission, I usually let Sidonis live in my plays except in renegade ones. Not because I feel bad for Sidonis, but because I think it helps Garrus more if you let him live. Garrus is kinda thick and you have to beat a little sense into him at some points. User Info: Sphynxette.

A better ending issues is I gave the militia on the citadel weapons and everyone still dies so should people not bother to give them the guns because its invalidated by the ending? As far as killing him since everybody else is saying about why they did so I felt bad for killing Sidonis and angry but not really at Garrus because he did let me know I was mad at myself for not standing up to him and letting him kill a man while I watched. After afew playthroughs I realized I'm the strongest person in the galaxy why aren't I standing up to Garrus?
Then I did and relized he was probably very likly going to kill me once we met back up. I was very surprised he didn't try to smash my head into the car and choke me half to death while growling at me for stopping him.

My Shepard knew that Sidonis had to die by Garrus' hand after what he'd done. The only thing missing was a bag of 30 silvers left with him. Slayer Status: Offline. Why murder two Krogan, threaten a volus, kill a bunch of mercs, then beat the crap out of Harkin just to get Sidonis' location" That is exactly my point. Harkin makes a similar remark. Something along the lines of " At no time does Paragon Shepherd make any remark about "killing is wrong". I don't see how that dialogue option would be present with a Renegade Shepherd for obvious reasons.
Is Garrus pursuing Sidonis as Garrus or as Archangel? In my interpretation, this is about Garrus's redemption.
