I did what you said go straight from Dirty Colossus and kill the bugs near the Primeval Demon but they weren't really dropping many chunks. In a previous run through on that level, it took a few kills of the mosquitos first to get them to drop anything. So after I took your route, I backtracked the level to near the slugs after where you fall down from the huge climb and killed the 4 mosquitos there. Every single mosquito dropped something, about 2 chunks per trip.

Maybe the game makes you kill a few mosquitos before loads of drops or just coincidence? Honestly, I don't care now that I got the platinum trophy!
