What is the difference between taffeta and silk

Satin is a type of weave with a lustrous front and a dull back. This weave has four or more fill or weft yarns floating over a warp yarn or vice versa.

Also, it can be formed using both natural fibres as well as artificial fibres. We also call the resultant fabric satin. Satin fabrics are light, smooth and soft to the touch.

They have a glossy or shiny appearance, like silk. They also have good drape, which makes it ideal for form-fitting dress patterns. We usually use satin for formal dresses, blouses, lingerie, nightgowns, shirts, neckties, etc. It is also used to make pointed shoes used for ballet dances. Satin is ideal for formal wear. Like taffeta, we use it to design wedding dresses, prom dresses and ball gowns. Taffeta is stiffer than satin and has a good shape retention quality; it can hold the shape and volume better than satin.

Available in a myriad range of colors and patterns, taffeta is considered the best in silk for drapery, upholstery and dressmaking. Taffeta originated in Persia. The name, derived from Persian, means "twisted woven. The cloth is made of a plain or tabby weave, and the textures vary considerably. The fabric is smooth, tightly woven with fine warp yarn and has a plain weave. Silk Taffeta has a crisp drape and comes in various weights.

China was the first country to develop silk over 4, years ago Originally it was only worn by Chinese Emperors. The emperors tried to keep the knowledge of sericulture the raising of silkworms a secret in order to maintain a monopoly on the manufacture of silk fabric.

Eventually silk began to spread throughout Asia. The demand was so high that it became one of the staples of international trade for China. Old Testament references indicate that silk was known in biblical times in western Asia. Again in the New Testament, mention is made of silk in relation to the fall of Babylon. The Chinese are credited for developing trade with the West, beginning around the 2nd century BC.

The ancient Persian courts used Chinese silks that they deconstructed and rewove into their own designs, making them uniquely Persian. So I just looked and they have the exact dress I want in Taffeta as well as silk. For about dollars less. I tried googling the differences but I couldnt get a good side by side comparison. I assume that the silk is better as it is more expensive and while picking through other forums i saw something about taffeta being make with some ace..

I think taffeta is a stiffer fabric with more sheen to it, while silk is very soft and has more of a glow. I just ordered my gown and after trying on polyester satin gowns for weeks, I put on my gown which is silk satin and was like, whoa this fabric is amazing. But I have always loved satin so I think that also there are many kinds of silks out there so it really depends what kind of silk you are talking about.

Overall as a general rule I would say, go with the fabric that has a better drape and smooths you out more. Can you share a pic of the dress? Joined Nov 12, Messages 5, Tafetta can be made of silk. Silk can come in chiffon, tafetta, satin as in silk satin , etc.

Tafetta is one of the stiffest versions and can look very elegant and formal. Silk will breathe more than synthetics if the tafetta is synthetic? But that''s a lot of money! How do I tell what kind it is? It just says tafetta on the website. I guess I will have to find a store that carries it and try it on. Yes, no kidding.
